Holiday!

Tis exams time here at Old Aberdeen, which means one thing – holidays are coming! Hence we will be shutting up shop here at AUSHAS for a bit. I’m about to go abroad for 4 weeks, Nooreen will be working full time and the rest of the committee will be away living their lives as well. Feel free to email us, but if you do so after Monday you will get a lovely automated message telling you politely that we’re not really around just now.

So I implore you also to go live your lives people and we’ll see you in September for another fantastic year, which we have loads of plans for!

P.S. I will try to occasionally blog on WSH, so if you want a bit of an Aberdeen Atheist fix then you can see if anything is happening there.

First Post from Kate

Hey folks, guess who?

As Pyke has put before me, we’re now in the process of sorting the website out to be a bit more suited for our needs. Nooreen and I are now able to post, so you should be hearing from us more often. It has been basically decided that this website will be for society business only, i.e. when meetings are, reviews of meetings and perhaps other relevant university/Aberdeen specific info.

However, what I felt we were basically lacking was a more discussion type blog, where I can highlight relevant items from the media and internet for your perusal, and hopefully get some discussion going. I have now set up a blog for this at The Wee Scottish Humanist, there is also a link for this on the left hand side, but I thought I would just highlight it. I’ve already posted my first blog about a running debate on guardian.co.uk about New Atheists.

See you there!

changes to site

the site’s had a minor overhaul, and there’s now a lot more links to peruse at your godless leisure. be sure to check out Kate’s new blog.

new committee and changes to the Society

ok, we decided a few things at the AGM. first of all, we’re now officially called AUSHAS instead of AUASHAHASHASSSHHHAAAAAAS, so people can actually remember and/or pronounce our name and so that our secular humanism is emphasised a little more (the atheism scares some unenlightened folks off, apparently.)

second, we’re going to be affiliated with several national organisations, like the CU are, to give us more of a network and a better resource pool. more on that when the affiliations go through.

third, we gagged Jerzy (and probably also my Dawkins-loving, Hitchens-quoting, Grayling-fanclubbing self) at SA functions, because he’s been a very naughty boy, and there is only one way to deal with very naughty boys.

fourth, we gave Alex, our founder President, honourary membership for life, and changed the way we give out honourary membership so that an actual contributuion needs to be made, and a couple committee members need to make the nomination. it’s to avoid people who sat on the committee but didn’t do anything getting auto-hons when they graduate.

lastly, we democratically elected a brand new committee and there was much rejoicing. the roster is:

President: Nooreen Akhtar

Kate Foggo – Secretary

Andrew Beggs – Treasurer

Sandy Gardner – Publicity Officer

Kia Sheldon – Charities Officer

Vicky Armstrong – Ordinary Member

Alicia Mason – Web Officer

enjoy your new AUSHAS! – AM

AGM this Wednesday!

it will be in Taylor A21, at 7:30pm for the masses and 7pm for committee members. there’ll be signs posted so that nobody gets lost who doesn’t know their way around the Languages Labyrinth.

you’ll get to see all of us, your faithful committee, faithfully detail all of our hard work for our godless buddies. irony in my use of the word ‘faithful’ is duly noted. you’ll also be able to supplant any of us except Kia, the Charities Lady, by voting on committee positions (and i could probably be replaced rather easily.)

we’ll be talking about changing the name of the society from AUAHSHAHSHAHASHSAAASSS to AUSHAS, maybe changing the day of the week we meet on to make it easier for people, making the vice-president position official, affiliations, and honorary membership – who should be one and who we want to be one. Kate and Daniel will be presiding over us (like the Obamas, only cooler, less religious and not together.)

turn up, and i might bring snickerdoodles! – AM

merry godlessmas and a happy new year!

happy holidays, peeps. issues with the site redirect on aushas.org should be sorted out soon, and in the meantime, we’re on the Humanist Society of Scotland site! thanks Kate for the idea. good luck with your exams everyone.

Humanist Society of Scotland – meeting Wednesday 19th

and we’re all invited! there’ll be a special talk on ‘Paths to Humanism’, and we’ll be able to introduce ourselves and meet the other members of the HSS, who seem pretty cool. meet Alex outside the Hub at 6.15pm if you wanna walk up, or otherwise meet us at the Skene Hotel at 7pm. see you all there

new URL now active

peeps, instead of bookmarking the wordpress URL, you can alternatively now bookmark http://www.aushas.org/ which will redirect you after 10s to here (or there’s a link there). it’s just easier to remember, type etc. update your bookmarks.html!

new AUSHAS email address

you can now get to us at an address that isn’t hotmail-based and won’t carry MSN ads. we’re now reachable at aushas@abdn.ac.uk. delete the old hotmail address if you have it, since we won’t be using it after Kate finishes transferring all the emails over.

“Whoa, electronic mail.

Blood drive 10th, 20th November

in Elphinstone Hall, 11am – 4pm. Jerzy is asking Charities if we can get involved somehow, but if not, go give blood anyway, out of the goodness of your godless hearts. <3
